Watercolor Kingfisher

A bright Kingfisher to start your week off!
I just love watching these birds—scooping up little fish and then setting themselves up in the trees like they really were the kings of the world.

Happy Monday!

Another post brought to you by Sketch Dailies!  Earlier this week the topic was Hermione Granger from Harry Potter!  I was geeked and had a few fun ideas that I wanted to try out... unfortunately, time just has not been on my side, so this simple pose is what I had to settle with (client work comes first on a busy week!)
Feedback is welcome as always :)

#OOTDsketches (33)

Throughout the week make a quick sketch of what I am wearing on that particular day, either as a warm-up or just to keep me loose if I don't have a lot of time to draw.  These drawings are then scanned and posted on my blog every Wednesday.  Enjoy!
Right:: Navy stripes and a bright red cardigan.  Need I say more?
Left:: Bad day.  So discouraged at the end that I couldn't even get a happy-ish face on my drawing.  So there it is, the blank stare.

Right:: Back to work with a smile—though thankful for an opportunity to wear jeans to work as we were painting quite a bit!  I was also told that I looked like a professor in my jacket—the kids just don't seem to know what to do with me when I wear that (if only they would pay better attention as a result! hah)
Left::  Went to my in-law's after a hard day of playing catch-up and get-ahead.

Oil Pastel Portrait

While sorting through some of my old sketchbooks (ah-em, while trying to clean out my office space, which currently looks like a bomb just went off), I ran across some old drawings that I thought I would share a few of them

I don't work with oil pastels very often, and when I do I am often discouraged and frustrated at my own lack of talent.  In my head, it makes sense how everything should work out—I understand how the media works, the texture, the strengths, the weaknesses are all apparent to me.  But no matter how often I work with it, my visions of success never seem to work out with oil pastels.

I'm very "tight" (detailed, exact and literal) in my style and oil pastels need a level of loose application and freedom that does not come to me naturally.  After I'm "finish" with each attempt, my head hurts from trying to break my own mold and I am not at all satisfied with the result.

All that to say, this will probably be the only oil pastel piece that you ever see from me on this blog.  My best friend, on the other hand, is fabulous with pastels.  And as soon as I can talk her into starting her own blog/website, I will send you her way.

Sketch Dailies: Poison Ivy

I've spoken before about Sketch Dailies and the drawing prompts that they challenge artists all over the world with each week.  One of the subjects last week was Poison Ivy (Female villain from Batman if you are unfamiliar) and I was in the perfect mood to tackle a "bad girl".

Not that I was in a bad mood, but sometimes the villain has some attractions ;)  I posted this piece on my twitter earlier this week, but realized that I had not shared it with those in the blogging world.

This piece was done on pastel paper (thus the texture) with my beloved Prismacolor pencils.  I wanted to give Ivy a slightly more modern and modest look, like still keeping with the traditional costume.

FabHER Fridays:: Hosea 8:7

Welcome to "FabHER Fridays"! A wonderful opportunity for the lovely ladies of the blogosphere to share a post and make some friends while gaining additional exposure for their blogs. This linkup is open to everyone—from fashion to art (like me!), health to lifestyle, fitness to beauty.  All are welcome!

I just finished a study of Hosea through the lovely program provided by "She Reads Truth" ministries.
While I usually prefer heavier studies, it was nice to have something regularly scheduled, to communicate online with other women who were working through the same study with me, and just to dig deeper into a book that I don't often focus on.

This verse stuck out to me, and so, a quick typographic piece was made as I waited for my cold to go away, and the electricity to come back on last week.  It's nothing spectacular, but I thought it might be beneficial to see how my work progresses, since I am hoping to have a more finished version to show you shortly :)

#OOTDsketches (32)

Throughout the week make a quick sketch of what I am wearing on that particular day, either as a warm-up or just to keep me loose if I don't have a lot of time to draw.  These drawings are then scanned and posted on my blog every Wednesday.  Enjoy!

My sketches this week aren't very exciting.  Or very numerous.  Due to being quite sick all week, not having power, working out of a spare sketchbook (with gross yellow paper that tints my sketches and makes them look . . . weird), and an extremely busy schedule, I was just not able to get around to drawing with diligence.
Not even for warm-ups.

Sorry y'all—next week is fresh and will (I trust) be full of sketches to share.
Until then,
K
